Chief Executive Placement - Case Study 1

Client: Australian listed mining services company with global operations.

Brief: Executive search for a new CEO. The client was seeking for an internationally-exposed candidate who could originate from any industry.

Process: Swann undertook an extensive target-market mapping exercise examining a wide range of industries including mining, mining services, chemicals, agriculture, infrastructure, engineering and other capital intensive fields. Swann analysed over 120 companies and assessed over 140 candidates, half of which were narrowed down through matrix analysis of their profiles. The top 20 candidates identified were then profiled in further detail. The client selected seven shortlist candidates for the interviews, which were conducted by Swann’s senior directors. The interviews were conducted face-to-face albeit these candidates being based in different parts of the world, and comprehensive reports and recommendations were provided based on these individuals.

Outcome: This thorough process assisted the client in making the right decision and appointment for the company.

Technical Recruitment - Case Study 2

Client: Global Top 5 diversified mining company.

Brief: Extensive restructuring and recruitment initiative within the client’s Technical & Sustainability Group. Swann was tasked with identifying the top 2-3 experts internationally to fill roles in multiple highly technical fields across Geosciences, Mining, Processing, Technology Development and Exploration. This included roles with limited precedence. In addition to the niche technical nature of these roles, Swann was tasked with ensuring that the candidates displayed the necessary level of Emotional Intelligence to drive a technical transformation within the company.

Process: Swann partnered with our client over a period of 18 months.Frequent communication was carried out with the client led by Swann’s Project Manager based in the UK. Swann’s project team consisted of up to 14 members of Swann’s research unit across the globe and brought on board the expertise of our Technical Directors.

Outcome: Successful placement of 21 candidates, at General Manager through to Senior Vice President-equivalent level.

Consulting & Research - Case Study 3

Client: Major global diversified mining house.

Brief: Study of the feasibility of setting up a Technical Hub in South Africa. The client was cognisant of their need for a South African to lead this venture to ensure regional buy-in, but were conscious that the requisite technical talent may not be available in-country.

Process: Swann was engaged to examine the labour market for South African professionals living abroad who possess the suitable skills required to lead the Technical Hub, and to provide profiles of potential candidates for this role. In conducting this study, Swann provided our client with an understanding of the South African talent diaspora and an assessment of the likelihood of these professionals returning to South Africa – including factors that would motivate such a return.Desktop study was conducted for suitable candidates and views of Swann’s technical directors and consultants, were sought for industry intelligence. A large number of Swann’s network of industry sources located in countries identified as the focus of the South African diaspora were also interviewed.

Outcome: On the basis of our extensive research, we were able to make a suitable recommendation to our client on the likelihood of success in attracting talent back to South Africa, and what they might do to improve the success rate.

Board Renewal - Case Study 4

Client: Global Top 5 gold mining company.

Brief: Swann was engaged to source two board members as part of the client’s board renewal process. The board required technical and operational skills as well as expertise in managing stakeholders and community groups in remote locations.

Process: Swann identified two highly experienced operational board members, one of them being a female first-time board member and the other a veteran Non-Executive Director. Swann volunteered additional coaching services to the successful candidates to ensure they were even better prepared concerning issues expected to be faced whilst on a major company board, such as shareholder activism and operational goals.

Outcome:  Successful placement of two operational Non-Executive Directors.
